■«» . THE LAKE COLERIDGE WORKS. By Telegraph—Press Association. Christehureh, Last Night. The Hon. W. Fraser, Minister of Public Works, telegraphed in reply to the secretary general of the Laborers' Union, who asked re the date of the inquiry into the eonditions of work at the Lake Coleridge hydro-electric works, and if the union would be represented thereat, as follows: "The resident engineer has been instructed! .to nuke full inquiries on all the points complained of. You had better consult him as to the date. I have just been advised that there is no obligation on a contractor to "employ a certificated engine-driver to lower men down the shaft, a* a tunnel is not a mine, but a quarry under the provisions of the Stone Quarries Act, The resident engineer at Christchurch will doubtlessly report on this point aJso."
[ NORTH CANTERBURY'S TELEGRAPH LINES. ChristdniTCh, Last Night. Mr. G. T. Kemp, telegraph, engineer, who has just returned from' supervising the work of .repairing the lines between Waiau and Kaikoura,states that there is stilt big work before the gangs. The Department has decided to build a deviation along a course four and a half miles long, so as to cut out the present Mason river course, an extremely dangerous section. It runs along the top of a steep clay cutting. Then iron bark poles are to be put in to strengthen the iron posts in the worst places on the road. Following that will come the important work of a pole-to-pole examination as far as the Conway, it being necessary after heavy storms to examine the wires on cverypole.
GODLEY HEAD. Christehurcli, La„st Night. The need of some distinguishing mark on Godley Head to assist vessels making the port, in foggr weather was brought under the Lyttel'ton Harbor Board's attention yesterday by Captain A. J. MeGibbou, master of the s.s. Kent. The secretary of the board said that Captain Hunter, acting-harbormaster, snjrgested the. painting of a rook white. The engineer approved of this suggestion, and thought it the hoard's rfutv to make the distinguishing mark. Tt would eoM the board £!> to act on Captain Hunter's suggestion. The board decided to make the distinguishing mark;'and to thank Captain "MV'Oibbon for drawing its attention to the matter.
