SOUTH AFRICA v. AUSTRALIA. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright. London, August 5. .For the match Australia v. South Africa there was intermittent sunshine ami showers and a strong wind. There were 2UUO spectators. The ground was soaked, and this delayed the start till noon. Mitchell. Carter, Campbell. Cox, Schwartz and Hartigan were omitted from the South African team, and Maync, MiieLarcn, We.b,,ter and ,'Sniith stood out of the Australian team. Tancred won the toss, and, after some hesitation, decided to bat, Taylor and Tancred fating YVhittymid iMinnett. There was an unfortunate start. Taylor was nearly run out the first ball, and then had his off stump down in trying to hit a ball that kept low.—One foi 2. Nourse filled the vjicancy. A shower delayed play for five minutes, and Hazlitt and Matthews howled on the resumption. The ball was kicking occasionally, and. Matthews was turning to leg. A good stand was made by nearly all the remainder of the batsmen, Xourse and Tancred adding 77 for the second wicket. Fifty was hoisted in seventy minutes, and at lunch time the score was one for 50.
On resuming play in sunshine 4000 J were present. Matthews and Hazlitthad the bowling. With Nourse offdriving and Tancred playing carefully, runs were coming steadily, so Emery I replaced Hazlitt at 77., Two runs i later Tancred was taken neatly in the j slips. bourse had then made 30 in I 100 minutes. Two for 79. Faulkner came in, and at 88 rain delayed play for twenty minutes. Emery and Matthews howled on, the resumption, and, runs coming freely, 101 was hoisted in ' } 335 minutes. Whitty replaced Mat- j thews at 109, and with seven added J Faulkner was caught in the slips off I Carkeek's hands. He had been in for j 40 minutes. Nourse had made 49. , Three, for 110. Llewellyn filled the] vacancy. The fielding was uncertain ' Another fair stand- was made, Nourse reaching 50 in ,145 minutes. He com tiimed to 04, and then played on. His innings was faultless, and his hits included six fours. "He received an ovation.—Four for 140. Strieker succeeded him, and 150 was hoisted in 185 minutes. On resuming, then; were 5000 round the ground, and the, day was bright. Whitty and Emery were the howlers. Strieker added three and then lost ' Llewellyn. Five for 154. Snooke filled the vacancy, and a good stand ensued. Kelleway replaced Emery at 170. and Macartney took the ball from Whitty at 103. * Snooko succumbed to Kelleway three runs later. The thirty minutes' partnership added 42. Six for 196. White came in next, and 200 was hoisted in 230 minutes. Hazlitt replaced Kellewey at 220. and five runs later Strieker put his leg in front. He played excellently, and was in for 80 minutes. Seven for 225. Beaumont followed, but did not last long, the partnership adding seven. Eight for 232. Pegler filled the vacancy, and there was another stand. The 250 was hoisted in 280 minutes: . Minnett replaced Macartney at" 253. Stumps had to, be drawn at 0.25 owing to the bad light.
