lIAWKE'S KAY (5, v. TARANAKI 0. By Telegraph—Press Association. Hastings, Last Might. The representative hockey match, flawke's Pay v. Taranaki, was played here this afternoon, llawke's Bay winning by 6 goals to nil. The. local forwards outclassed the visiting vanguard in the first half, and netted three goals, RHindell shooting two, and Mallet one. Taranaki showed better combination in the second spell, but the bona; team's superiority in the liner • points of the game enabled them to score three more goals, Plundell securing two, and Anderson one. The recent rains made, the ground heavy, and consequently ' play was not of a very high standard. GAME AT TATARAIMAKA.
The return hockey match, Married v. Single, was played at Tataraimaka on Thursday afternoon, and resulted in a win for the Married by four goals to one. Coals were scored for the Married by E. Turner Hi) and for the Singles by TV. Fisher. it was pleasing to 1 see , the able manner in which the old gentlemen were able to wield the willow. For the old-timers ,]. Cyde, ;it right inner, stood out noticeably, and showed great ability in fielding and striking the ball, K. Dougherty, W. Honeyfield and R. Moore, on the wings, put in much useful hitting, repeatedly blocking the rushes of the, opponents' forwards. T. Morris and C. Honeyfield, at full, were in splendid form, and on several occasions sent the ball whizzing into the Singles' 25, gaining 50 yards frequently with a stroke. W. 11. Hawkins, at goal, was a "dark horse," and rather surprised his sons, who, so it appeared, were busy getting .back on the "old man" a little of what he had' got on to them during their younger days. Although he dislocated his thumb, and received several nasty smacks on the body, in his brilliant attempts to stop shots at goal, he still smited and seemed to say, "Let 'em all come." Proctor had hard luck after a neat bit of play in not finding the net, the ball just striking one of the posts and rebounding into play. Turner captained the Married. For the Singles, P. and R. Hawkins played sterling games, and were, with Shaw, who played a solid game in mid-field, far the best players, at times making great use of some very Meat passes. W. Fisher, at centre, played his usual good game, while Cyde, Coombie brothers. Smith and Botcher made very able backs. R. Baillie refereed in a very capable manner. The ladies are worthy of very great praise for the way in which they prepared afternoon tea, which was much appreciated by the players and spectators.
It is understood that arrangements have practically been completed for holding the ladies' hockey champiojislvip at Ghristchureh, in place of Auckland. The tounwmient will, it is further understood, commence, as originally arranged, on August 3.1.
