From our Resident Reporter. BUILDING ENTERPRISES. THREE STOREYS AND A BASEMENT. The block of buildings now occupied by the Egmont Clothing Company, Messrs. Wa<rd and Dunlop (land agents"), | and the Eguion't Tea Rooms 'has been fiuld to Messrs. Hunter and Lyons, of j Stratford. The sito is central, and in • ewrv way suitable for the project which I these enterprising gentlemen have ina jmind. The present buildings are to be I demolished, arrangements ebiny made. of j course, to conserve the interests of the pre sunt le.-sees, of whom' the Kginont Clothing Company and Messrs. Ward and 1 Jit»lop ■iiave already bespoken premises in the new three-storeyed iireproof building which k to be erected of steel. The new shop loir the "Egniont" will be larger tluin the present one, and, to use a colloquial expression, the new premises wild be "built around" the existing f hop, so as not to dislocate business. The second shop on the ground floor is already practically let. There iis to be a basement, with a handsome entrance from the street. This will be fitted up as an up-to-date cafe, and really up-to-date, with fresh food vaults ; and every modern appliance. An electric ■ elevator will connect the basement with each succeeding floor, besides which there will be handsome staircases. The first floor will consist of suites of offices, for which there is sure 'to b< a keen demand. Here no effort or expense will be spared to make the offices thoroughly modem, tire whole building being wired for electric light, electric heaters and electric fans, whilst special attention will be paid to the day-lighting of the premises'. Rather more than half of the second floor will be reserved by Messrs. Hunter and Lyons for their growing dental business, and Mr. Hunter intends that their dental rooms shall be second to none in the Dominion. The rest of the second floor may be built as studio® or offices as the demand suggests. En- \ quiries are now being made with a view of utilising steel window frame® and a 1! I other steel 'building material which will I conserve space. Tne front elevation will I probably be planned on attractive lines, j the whole idea o! the owners to build j it so that it will be many a long day ere ■ it is classed as a back number, even in a | comparative sense. 1
It is good to see tihait the spirit of enterprise lias survived the vicissitudes of tin' year, and that Stratford is to haw BUch up-to-date buildings. The negotiate on.-> for the sale of the block were com'liif'twl by Mr. J. B. Richards, of Stratford.
As has already been mentioned, Mr. Newton King propose the erection of new two-storeyed offices and mart in Broadway south. The steady growth of the business necessitates more spacious and convenient buildings. Mr. King's business in Stratford cowrs a fair area of ground. There are the mart r/nd offices in Broadway, the Hayma.rkct and horse bazaar in .Tulict .street, and the extensive hide and skin stores in Cloton road. These were formerly the Stratford bacon factory premises.
I PERSONAL. j There was a pleasant gathering of members of the .Scottish Society and their friends at thie Foresters' Hall on Friday evening at the social tendered to Mr. and Mrs. Geo. "Sangrter, who are leaving Stratford to reside on their farm on the Beaconslicld road. Dancing and cards were the main forms o.f amusement. The dancers had a lovely floor and the usual excellent music provided by Miss McDonald, Miss Marcia Mackay playing for tihe extra dances. Miss E. Sangster, who possesses a voice of unusual quality, sang ''The Ixmnic tanks o' Loch Lomon'" and "Caller Herrin' pleasingly, and was heartily encored, aswas Mr. 11. W. Douglas for his "Mary, o' Argyll I ."' -Mr. ,T. Wade, in Highland 1 costume, danced a seantreus, and also 1 piped for the Scotch reel and Highland, schottische by the guests. At the supper adjournment, Mr. A. F. G<rant, a' vice-president of the eoclctv, ■expressed j tthe members' appreciation of the. good • work done for the society by Mr. and Mrs. Sangster, and their regTet that they • were going even as far as the Beaconsfield road. He had their assurance, however. that their interest in the -society would not flag, and that thev would always be ready to assist. Mr. Sangster briefly replied. The gathering concluded with "Auld Lang Syne" and cheers for gut.st*, with an extra salvo lor Miss McDonald, the popular pianist, who made her last appearance as musician in Stratford, in view of an approaching i event which will doubtless be duly rei ported. I
Our old and cheery friend Mr. John Leydon. who was injured a few weeks ago, has made a remarkable recovery, and is about again. Central Broadway has not seemed itself of late, but the re-appearsinee of Mr. Leydon's belltopper will restore it to its former appearance of prosperity. Mr. "Alf." Hobbs, who was killed in a motor-cycle accident near Ifawera on Thursday night, was well known here, and was very popular amongst the other stock agents. .Some few years ago he was in the service of the Bank of Now South Wales, but left it for the openair life, lie was a brother of Messrs. Harry .Hobbs and George Ilobbs, of Stratford, and 'of Mr; J. C. Hobbs, of Eltham.
Mr. A. King, managing clerk for Messrs. Wake and Wright, leaves at the end of the month for ltiverton, where he has obtained a good position. ■ STRAY PARAGRAPHS. The Lowgarth cheese factory opens for tile season to-day. Jiy the irony of Fate he is conveyed to the hospital where the doctor is superintendent. At lirst the loetor rrfusea to operate on his rival, but in response to the girl's pleading does so "for tier sake." The scene in the operating chamber is very realistic and exciting, for in the midst of the delisate operation, the hospital takes fire. The doctor continues and successfully performs the operation despite .the strange environment, and all are rescued by the firemen. Of course, the ultimate denouement ensues—the overseer recovers and .the doctor receives his reward. "The 'Loafer" is another intensely interesting drama, and "The Cowboy" is responsible for an exhibition of wonderful horsemanship. "On t'lie Banks of the Danube" is a ifine scenic, film, and "From egg to feather boa" an industrial film of unnsual merit. The remaining films are: The Gaumont. {-iraphLp (topisal)', "Testing . his courage" (drama), "Dupin delies waste-paper laws" (comic). "Oh, those eyes" (eomedy), "Tweedledum cartoon competition" (sidesplitter). "Pathe tSazette" (topical), and "Tom Tilling's baby" (comedy). •'
