ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES
A SCALDING ACCIDENT. By Telegraph—Press Association. Duriedin, Last Night. A very serious accident befell Mrs. John Cousins, of Blue Spur, on Friday. When taking a kettle of boiling water off the fire she was either seized with a fit or fainted, with the result that the contents of the kettle spilled over the lower part of her body and extremities. There was no one in the house when the accident occurred, and some time elapsed before one of the members of the family came home', and found the mother, who waa then in a #omatose state. The unfortunate woman was removed to the hospital, but it is doubtful if she will survive. A SUDDEN DEATH. Dannevirke, Last Night. The sudden death occurred on Saturday niglit of Robert Bertram Vernon Smith, agerl 26, son of Robert Vernon Smith, a land agent here. Deceased was in High street with lady friends when suddenly he. fell oil the footpath. He was taken immediately to the doctor's, expiring shortly after his arrival there. Medical evidence at the inquest to-day showed that death was due to a blood vessel breaking in his brain in a vital centre. A verdict was returned accordingly, and a r»Ur added expressing sympathy with the relatives.
SENSATIONAL ACCIDENT. Dannevirke, Last Night. A youth named Claude Wysocki, while working a folding machine at the News office oil Saturday, had an unenviable experience. While putting a belt into action his apron became entangled with a coupling shaft. Wysocki was caught up and whirled round several times, missing the roof and partition wall by a fraction of an inch. His agonised cries attracted attention and the engine was stopped and the lad taken down exhausted and bruised, but not seriously injured. He. had a very narrow escape from death. DEATH FROM HEART FAILURE. Gisborne, Saturday, •lames Whinray, a prominent townsman of Gisbovtie for 35 years, died suddenly of heart failuro this morning.
AX APPARENT SUICIDE.
Core, .Saturday, j A man of about 20 years, named • Daviti Hunter, lately working at 1 Palmerston North, was found on the Croydon road, near the Gore cemetery, yesterday afternoon. He was uncon-1 scions, and a pea rifle bullet was found J in his forehead. He was removed to j the hospital, but there is little hope of his recovery. He purchased the rifle i yesterday, and was found half an hour ' later. I
RAILWAY PORTER KILLED. Auckland, Saturday. Ernest Stewart, a tablet porter at Raurimu station, was shunting last night when he slipped between the trucKS. One leg was cut off below the knee. He was conveyed to the Taumarunud Hospital, but died early this morning. Deceased, who was 32 years of age, leaves a wife and two children.
MOTOR CYCLE FATALITY,
FULLER PARTICULARS.
Hawe-rn, Saturday. Last evening an accident, unfortunately attended with fatal results, occurred on tills* Main South road, near Takaora school, by which Mr. Alfred IT. Hobbs. aged 20, who is well known throughout this di.strict as an agent for Dalgety and Co., lost his life.
It appears that Messrs. (ipnrge■ and Harry Hopkins, of Kapmif, were driving 1 into Ha wiiia. in a. tfijr, and they .had just reached the (tip of the W - a inigongoro hill when they natieed in tin: dusk a motor cycle approaching. The cyclist was then,acoordin<; to a statement mode by Hopkins, on his right side of the road,, but on coming within fire yards the cyclist apjja.ren.tly seemed to' lose control of his machine and crossed right over to the wrong side of the Toad. The occupants of the gig saw that a collision was inevitable, but wore powerless to prevent it, with tflie result that the cyclist_ crashed right into the horse. Medical assistance was immediately sent for, but on n.rrival of Dr. Thomson life was jjrcnoimced to be extinct. Neither the gig nor cycle carried l lights. Tho horse had its leg broken, and was afterwards destroyed.
