Tim lottery for a wife, which takes place 1 annually at Smolensk, has been successful this year, all the tickets having been bonjjht. The promoters of the lottery select the young- wo.man, who has to be drawn for. She is then ordered to remain constantly at home for ten days to receive the visits'of candidates for her hand. The sale of 5000 tickets at a rouble each is controlled by -the municipal council. As soon as they are sold (lie lottery takes place, and tke winner has the right to marry the young woman and her fortune of 5000 roubles. She can, however, refuse the. man who has drawn the lucky number. In this case she has to. divide her .fortune with him.. Since the lotteries were established refusals have fbeen rare.
