A- NEW INDUSTRY. 1 REQUEST FOR AmSTAXCE- • The claims of a new industry the manufacture of casein—for assistance, were brought under the notice of the Prime Minister (Hon. W. F. Massey) by a deputation from the AVanganui Casein Company on Wednesday. Mr. 0. Hoist, the manager of the company, said the industry was an entirely new one in the Dominion. Casein was, lie added, the indigestible matter contained in skim milk, and was used for industrial purposes (such as kuife handles, billiard balls, and so on). The company had spent a considerable sum of money in developing the industry, and had imported au expert from Germany to initiate it. The extraction of the caßein from the milk did not in any degree reduce the feeding value of the milk.for calves and pigs; while, on the other hand, its extraction meant an additional 25s to 30s per cow per season. The industry was eminently adapted, he said, for Xew Zealand conditions, and the company askul that the Government should again put on the Estimates tha sum of £750 for the development of byproducts of the dairy industry, with the idea that the company should be recompensed for the expenditure it had incurred in connection with the industry, I and that the machinery now being imported should be classed as dairying machinery and admitted free. He added that if the industry were generally taken up by dairy companies, it would easily develop into an output of from £400,000 ' to £500,000 a year.

The Prime Minister, in reply, said the Government was out to encourage industry in every shape and form. Aru : officer of the Department of Agriculture ait Home was now making enquiries as to the establishment of the casein industry in Xew Zealand. When his report, came to hand, he (the Prime Minister) would bring it before Cabinet, and the whole matter would be carefully-con-sidered.
