THE BROTHERHOOD

i AX EVENING'S DEBATING. The third meeting of the New Plymouth Brotherhood Literary Debating Society was held in the Good TempSar Hall last evening. Impromptu speeches were the order of the day, and' ®ome most interesting subjects, several of which were exceedingly humorous, were dealt with. The first subject, "That i New Plymouth should adopt a tramway system;"' erfcated a good discussion, one speaker being of the opinion that New Plymouth should wait for a flying machine service. The motion was carried by ].") votes to G, members of the New Plymouth progressive party evidently being in the majority. The'motion that "Half a load Was better than no bread," also excited interest, the half loafers defeating the iron-loafers as the result of very little exertion. "Should ba<3heJors bo taxed" was fought out with a will between the married and unmarried members .of the society, several of the unmarried members being of the opinion that their present state was due to the backwardness of the young ladles of the day, whilst one, nioue determined than his fellows, declared 1 he would mther risk tli« tax than the lady. Perhaps the most amusing subject was ''That the mext Arnst v. Barry race be rowed on the Huntoki river." It took some time to open up the (|iiestion, several members being totally unaware of the whereabouts of (he river, until the chairman remarked that the .said r.iwr flowed through our great metropolis. One speaker mentioned that the rowing of the race would dispel tlfe idea- commonly ihohl by visitors flint the lluatoki was a .'ham. not a river, '['lie land question was also considered, the majority being mi fa\ (i! of the treehold. The moetiiii l ' derided ilml. the challenge received from the Kginont IJebating '(:i, L b.
