Mr. Stanley Shaw waa a passenger for Auckland by the Rarawa last night. Mr. E. V. Spear, inspector for New Zealand of the Commercial Union: Assurance Co., Ltd., isi officially visiting New Plymouth. Mr. E. Maxwell, who baa been representing Taranaki at the Dominion conference of the X,Z. Fanners' Union, returned to New Plymouth by the mail train last night. Mr. Newton King has received written advice from Mr. Georgt* Cock, in- which he states that Mrs. Rumney, formerly of New Plymouth, died in tho hospital at Durban, South Africa, on June 7, after a long and painful' illness. Mr. ,T. Gleeson, of Urenui, yesterday resigned his seat on the Clifton County Council owing to 'having disposed »f his property. The resignation was accepted. Members were highly eulogistic of the work done by Cr. Gleeson on the council, and a letter will be forwarded to him to that effect. The death has taken place of Sir Thomas Bortihwiek from a paralytic stroke. ' lie was only created a peer in June last, and had chosen the title of Lord Whitburgh. Sir Thomas ton the founder of the frozen meat business so successfully carried oil by Thos. Worthwick and Sons in Great Britain, Aiwr tralia, and New Zealand.
