A verdict has been delivered in the sugar case, wherein Sir Norman Maclatrin. director of the Colonial Sugar Company, was charged with failing to attend a .sitting of the Royal Commission on the sugar industry when subpoenaed. Tire magistrate ruled tliat the commission not having been found unlawful, and defendant having failed without Teasonable excuse to attend, wa.s guiltv of an offence under the Royal Com missions Act. He .imposed a fine of £25 with £320 costs, in default three months' imprisonment with hard labor. Twentvone days were allowed to pay the fine, in view of a passible appeal.
