Mr. and Mrs. J. Burkett, Ngaere, celebrated their silver wedding this week. / Mr. C. Ryan, of the Ohura district, has been elected to th* vacancy on the Taranaki Land Board. Mr. G. S. Millar, refinery <expert to the Taranaki Oil Wells Ltd., arrived in New Plymouth last night. Mr. J. Richard*, of the Railway Department, leaves this cvMiug i»v lh« Earawa on a holiday trip to Auckland. Mr. Stanley Grant has been appointed general manager for the theatrical firm of George Marlow, Ltd., in New Zealand. He intends to make Wellington his headquarters. It is a foregone conclusion (aays an English paper) that this year will witness the retirement of Mr. Asquith from the Premiership, to secure a well-earned rest in the House of Lords. Mr. Archibald arrived from the Ncrth yesterday to take up the position of chief clerk of the Lands office, in pi ape of Mr. 11. M. Bannister, who has been transferred to Wellington. Mr. P. Harrop, of the Lands and Survey Department, Napier, has received intimation of his promotion to New Plymouth as land transfer draughtsmair. He expects to leave Napier in the course of the next few days to take up his new duties.

Military gossip states (says the Dominion) that Lieutenant-Colonel Burnett Stuart's successor as Director of Military Operations and Intelligence at the General Headquarters, will bo a-n officer of the Imperial General Staff, wiho is at present employed iu New Zealand. The marriage took place at Whiteley Church yesterday morning of Mr. Fred Barnitt, youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. IT. Barnitt, of Old Hospital Road, and Miss Florence Smith, fifth daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Smith, of New Plymouth. The bride, who was given away l*y her father, was attended by Miss Elsie Smith as bridesmaid. Mr. M. H. Barnitt was best man. The- Rev. J. W. Burton performed t'he ceremony. The late Mrs. J. Smith, of Greytown, whose death occurred last week, was the relict of Dr. J. Smith, one of the early medical practitioners in the Wairarapn. Since the death of the latter, some years ago, Mrs. Smith had led a very retired life, and latterly had not enjoyed good health. Old residents of the district have very kindly recollections both of the late Mrs. Smith and of Dr. Smith. The deceased was 71 years of age at th« time of her death, and leaves three sons and one. daughter.
