THE TEST MATCH.
A LATE START. (ENGLAND BATTING. ': By GaUe—Press Association— Copyright. London, July 29. In the Australian team for the test match Minnet, Webster, Smith and McLaren were omitted, and Hayes was left out of the English eleven. Play did not start till 2.45 p.m. The weather was boisterous and the wicket very soft. There were 5000 spectators. Fry X won the toss, and Hobbs and Rhodes' as usual opened, to Hazlitt and Whitty. The bowlers needed much sawdust. Play was slow, six overs producing only eight runs. The fielding was smart. Twenty went up in 25 minutes. Hobbs succumbed to a break-back after 37 minutes. He played a skilful innings. Rhodes had made 12. He was uneasy and was mistiming the ball. He gave a chance before lie had scored, to point.—One wicket for 37. Spooner, who came in, played on next over.—Two for 39. Fry filled the vacancy. Macartney retired and McLaren came out as his substitute. Fry made two in twenty minutes, a leg bye making fifty in Go minutes. Nothing could be done with Whitty, and only small hits were made off Hazlitt. Kelleway replaced Hazlitt .at 60. Fry, when he had made four, was nearly taken by Whitty at short leg in Kelleway's first over. Rhodes was improving in confidence, and Fry had reached 19 when he was caught.—Three, for 83. Matthews replaced Whitty at 52. Fry'hit two fours in an over off Kelleway, and reached; double figures in 50 minutes, and was caught at long-off. Hearne came in, and when ho had hit a single was (badly missed by Whitty at mid-on. After the next over by Matthews, Hazlitt replaced Kelleway at 80. Hearne kept up his wicket while Rhodes was scoring. The century took 125 minutes. Rhodes became free/ after making 53 in 130 minutes. Emery replaced Matthews at 110. Rhodes was twice nearly run out by returns from Bardsley and Matthews. Hearne. after 50 minutes, was yorked. He missed double figures. Rhodes had made 75. He whs becoming enterprising, doing some late cutting—Four for 140. Woolley filled the vacancy, and 150 was hoisted in 1.05 minutes.- Whitty replaced Emery at 154. and got AYoolley caught at fine leg—Five for 155. Foster filled the vacancy, and Matthews relieved Whitty at 173. Foster was taken from a skier. He was nearly (caught -by Whitty at mid-on off Hazlitt, when he had not scored. Rhodes had made 88, and was cautious.—Six for 175. Smith came in, and played out time. Rhodes' innings of 220 minutes was an admirable one. He gave a chance before scoring to> Hazlitt off Whitty.
