IMPERIAL DEFENCE.
SIR GEO. REID'S VIEWS. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright. Received 30, J0.40 p.m. London, July 30. Sir Geo. Reid, interviewed on Imperial defence, said that the call of the sea was in the blood of all. The Dominions would do well to respond with larger sacrifices, rather than cash contributions, but <»ach self-governing colony should be left free to make its own response. Referring to the co-ordination of the Empire's efforts, calm investigation led to only two practical results—unbounded wonder that an Imperial system so loose and disjointed worked so marvellously, and the stubborn fear that closer bonds might lea-d to greater friction. The Dominions, he said, can now take their share in the Imperial councils, and would be more powerful, perhaps, than they would be if entitled to sit in an Imperial Parliament formed on a basis of population.
