The Hon. 0. Samuol will leave shortly on another hip abroad. Dr. Walker will he a passenger to Wellington by this morning's mail train. Mrs. Smith has been appointed caretaker of the Central and Courtenay street schools. Mr. 0. Sisley, of the Post and Tele"graph Department, left this morning oil transfer to Napier. Mr. 11. F. Knight, of Rotorua, formerly in practice at New Plymouth as ti dentist, is on a visit to this district, Mr. J. Rutherford, who has been appointed manager of the Te Aroha Dairy Company, left last night by the Rarawa. Mr. J. D. Morison, late of Stratford, but now-of Te Aroha, arrived by th« Rarawa yesterday, and is spending a, few days in the Stratford district. It was reported in New Plymouth yesterday that Mr. .). A. McArthur, formerly manager of the Sash and Door Factory, had been shot dead in Sydney. Passengers by the mail train to Wellington yesterday morning included tin Hon. ().' Samuel 'and Mr. F. C. J. Bellringer, chairman of the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board. Mr. Bell ringer is on business connected with the proposednew hospital.
Mr. 0. E. Archibald, senior clerk of the Auckland Lands office, who Ims been promoted to chief clerk for the Taranaki land district in succession to Mr. 11. A. Bannister, who has been promoted to the Wellington office, is expected to arrive in New Plymouth by to-night's mail train.
The Wellington Education Board passed a resolution yesterday congratulating Mr. W. C. Buchanan, M.P., on the opening of the h»me for incurables at Greytowu, and wishing him years of health in which he may realise the benefit conferred on the "Dominion by liig generous gift, and by his long and valuable service as a member of the board. Mr. 11. M. Bannister, of the Lands Department, New Plymouth, who leaves by this morning's mail train to take, up the position of chief clerk in the Lands office, at Wellington, was presented with a travelling bag by the local legal fraternity at a gathering in the law library at the Courthouse yesterday. In making the presentation, Mr. R. C. Hughes spoke- in high commendation of the unfailing courtesy members of the Bar hud always received at Mr. Bannister's hand*. He also referred to the assistance lent to them by Mr. Bannister on account of his accurate knowledge of the land laws. In reciprocating the Bar's expressions of goodwill, Mr. Bannister rejoiced thai his relations with members of the local legal profession had always been of a pleasant nature.
