WOULD-BE SUICIDE. HAD LOST WILL-POWER AND •RELIGION. ( Dunedin, July 25. J About 9 o'clock this morning a stir was : caused by the action of a young man. Arthur Somerville, who with pockets loaded with heavy stones jumped from the Victoria wharf into the harbor. lie was promptly rescued by a boatman and handed over to the police. An hour later the man appeared before Mr. Widdowson, S.M., at the Police Court to answer a charge of having at- ' tempted to commit suicide. When asked whether he desired to be dealt with summarily or before a jury lie said he did not care where he was tried, though he pleaded guilty. His plea was not acceptI ed.

Sub-Tnspector Cruickshank explained that the man, who had been about four years in the Dominion, bad come down from Mid dlema roll about ten days ago and had resided in a boardinghouse since his arrival. lie was not without money, there being about £3 of his at the boardinghouse. He had explained his conduct by saying he could not sleep, that he had lost his will-power, and that be had lost his religion. It was clear his mind was affected. His Worship said it would be better to remand the case for a week, during which time the man could be placed under medical observation. Accused was remanded till August 1.
