SUNDAY GOLF.
AND OTHER OFFENCES. Levin, July 26. J Some feeling is being caused in church circles at the alleged widespread disregard of the Sabbath in Levin. During •the past season bowls were played on the local green by a number of members on j Sundays, and it is stated that there is a possibility of Sunday golf. The Rev. A. C. Randerson, at the Presbyterian' Church, has spoken very strongly on the'! subject. On Sunday he said that Levin J was no more, and probably no less, no- < torious for its wickedness than any other j town. Non-church-going was a fashion J in Levin, especially among young men! and young married people. Another) •habit characteristic of the town might be I describer as "going the pace." One who ! "went the pace" must have the best of! everything—flash horse and equipage, > fashionable garments of fancy prices, all the amusements in the rtrtmd of the year, and on a limited salary. Result: Tradesmen's debts, extended credit. He affirmed that a great many more people passed through the local bars on Saturday than appeared at a place of worship on Sunday. Gambling was a question on which the law was very unequal. It afforded facilities for entering the premises of Chinese suspected of playing their national games of fan-tan or pak-a-poo, but no like facilities for entering gentlemen's clubs, and the houses of well- 1 to-do people against whom grave suspicion might lie of gambling in European fashion.
