A SALUTARY SENTENCE. By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, Last Night. Magistrate Cutten deals severely with anyone convicted of assaulting constables in the course of their duty. To-day Tho.s. Henry Parker was sentenced to twelve months' imprisonment with hard labor for such an ofl'ence. SIR JOSEPH WARD. Auckland, Last Night. In the course of an interview, Sir Joseph Ward declined to discuss the position in regard to the leadership of the Opposition, but spoke optimistically of the future prospects of the Liberal party. He opened the new Trades Hall to-night, and left for the south by the Main Trunk line.
