The steamer Empress of Britain, with a thousand passengers for Liverpool, collided in a fog with the British collier Helvetia, off Cape Breton. The Helvetia sank. The crew were saved. The Empress of Britain returned with her bows damaged. Received 30, 1.20 a.m. Ottawa, July 29. The Helvetia was cut in two, and Bankimmediately. The Empress of Britain was stove in her fore compartments, which filled. Some of the passengers and mails were transferred to a steamer standing by.
