A very old identity of Koss and Reefton., Mr. Elisha Lockington, aged 74, a sawmiller, died on Saturday morning. The death occurred at Pahautanui on Saturday of Mr. Charles Stewart, an old settler in the district. . Deceased was sixty-six years of age. At the annual meeting of the Tarauaki Jockey Club last night, the Hon. 0. Samuel apologised for the absence of Mr. Newton King, who is at present confined to his house through illness. Miss L. W. Will, 13-.A., one of the first women to take that degree at Canterbury College, died in the Otago district last Friday. She was a daughter of the Rev. W. WiH, of East Taieri, and a sister of Dr. T. A. Will, of Kangiora.
Mr. H. J. Roller, la'tc manager of the Uruti dairy factory, has been appointed manager of the Bell Block factory, vice Air. J. Rutherford, who has resigned in order to take up a more remunerative position. In appreciation of his .services the directors and shareholders of his late factory have presented him with an illuminated address.
At the meeting of the Taranaki Jockey Club last night the Hon. 0. Samuel, M.L.C., regretted that he would be absent from the deliberations of the committee for some -months, as he intended going abroad, and on this account he thought it would be desirable for the committee to eleqt another member as president. At the urgent request of the committee, however, he consented to be re-elected.
Death has removed another of the „fast-appearing band of pioneer settlers in the person of Mr. John Searle, who mis found dead at his residence, Fitzroy, yesterday morning. As a lad of eighteen years, Mr. Searle arrived from England in the Canterbury, entering Mr. Gaine's butchery business at Rahotu. Later on he took over the lease of the Oakura Hotel. Subsequently he took over the Eltham Hotel. He retired after being in business a number of years, and took up his residence at Fitzroy. Jt is just about two years ago -since Mr. Searle revisited his native land after a separation of 40 years. Mr. Searle, who was (17 years of age, was esteemed by a wide circle of friends, and as evidence of his public-spiritedness it is interesting to note that while resident at Eltham lie presented the municipality with the site 011 which the Eltham I'os't Oll'iee at present .stands. His wife died suddenly some vonths ago in. one of the hot water baths nt Te Arolw.
Hidwin J. U :Nnn. who. it is announced, has o- I 'aincd with .--pecial distinction the mediaeval and modern languages tripos at Camliriilire University, is stated to be the first Canterbury College student to receive that honor (snvs the Tjvtteltou Times). Tn while studying at Xelson College. Air. Wilson gained a junior scholar.-hip and came to Canterbury College. Mr. Wilson acted as Professor Tihmt'.s assistant in miO, and secured his B.Sc. dejrme in that year. Tie then went to A upland," where -he taught at St. John's College for some time. Whilst there hj" secured one of (he free passages granted by the Orient Company to Xe\v Zealaivi graduates, and went Cambridge the same year. Besides .shidvino- 'or th" tripos at Cambridge. Mr. Wilfr.i acted as coach to several students.
