The Mayor (Mr. G. VV. Browne) left for Wellington on Saturday morning to attend the Municipal Conference. He will break tho return journey to New Plymouth at Wanganui, in order to spend a few days investigating th» local tramways system. A Wellington man writes to the Auckland Observer: "Since Joe Ward's burden has been definitely lifted he i» a pink. Haven't seen him look so blooming for ten years. Quite athletic, and has lost at least seventeen pounds beneath the waistooast. Complexion like a baby's, no balder, smiles like a cherub. See him rushing off'with his golf sticks at every opportunity. Have heard that he has taken to the gloves as an extra relaxation. Is he the Whit* Hope? People here believe that he has some political surprises up his sleeve and is getting fit to disclose them. At anyrate, his present life is one long smilt."' Writing of the late Mr. Henry Scott McKcllar, who died at Wellington last week at tho ripe age of 79 years, the Wellington Dominion says:—Mr. McKcllar was one of the few' left who connect the present generation with the early days of the Anglican Church in the Dominion. His name is to be found attached to the constitution of the Church of the Province of New Zealand, which was drawn up in 1857, and ratified in 18(i5, and which gave the Church a definite status as a self-governing .body in communion with, but independent of the Church at Home. The constitution became the model of similar constitutions in other colonies. For about a generation he held I lip position of treasurer to the General .Synod of New Zealand, and also of treasurer for the Melancsian Mission, and member of the Synod in the diocese of Wellington. As a young man he knew, and frequently came in touch with the great Bishop Selwyn. It is only a. short time since Mr." McKcllar relinquished this work in the Church owing to failing health. With his death another of the men who helped to 'lay the foundation of our national life has heen called away. The late Mr. McKcllar was a widower, and leaves two daughters, Mrs. Noel Barraud, of Paiknkariki, formerly of Palnierston North, and Mrs. Oswald Porritt. ofsthe latter town.
