AUSTRALIA v. SUSSEX. AUSTRALIANS BAT WELL. By Oftbl*—Prws Afsoeiatien—Copyri^it. I London, July 25. I The weather was fine and the wicket \' fast for the opening of the match Australia v. Sussex. Gregory won the toss, and sent in Jennings and Kelleway to face the bowling of A. Relf and Holloway. The batsmen were soon busy, Jennings doing some fine driving and cut- i ting. He gave a difficult chance at 15. I Kelleway showed dogged play, and the fifty went up in 45 minutes. Jennings' innings lasted 70 minutes. He hit eight j .fours. Kelleway was at the wickets for 80 minutes, and made some good strokes to leg. Macartney, who succeeded Jennings, was in fine form. With Bardsley he put on 99 for the third wicket. Bardsley played excellent cricket. He hit ten off one over of Vine. He batted 1 for an hour and played a chanceless innings, gaining his runs by drives and leg hits. Macartney was joined by Minnett, after Matthews had left, and the pair added 40 for the fifth wicket. The 200 was hoisted in 150 minutes.
Macartney and Gregory added 57 for the sixth wicket. Macartney, in attempting a drive, was bowled. His was a magnificent display, especially of driving and late cutting. His century took 110 minutes, and he batted for 150 minutes. His score included 28 fours. He was missed when he had made 12 at long-on. The remainder of the team made a creditable stand, the last four adding 75. Gregory was in for 85 minutes. He was badly missed when at 23. The 300 was hoisted in 200 minutes, and the innings lasted 285 minutes. Scores:—
