NEWTON KING'S WEEKLY REPORT
On Friday, 19th inst., at my Waiwakaiho yards, I had a very large entry of cattle, including a number of catalogued pedigree Jerseys, on account of Mr. G. G. Grover, Oakura, and the estate of E. Handley, Nukumaru, and other vendors. The attendance was very representative, possibly the largest seen at Waiwakaiho for years. Bidding throughout was spirited, especially for the Herd Book cattle and best dairy cows. Mr. G. 'fi. drover's stock were in excellent condition, realising as follows:—Pedigree cow, Silver Darkie, W. Vickers, Midhirst, 31gns.; pedigree cow, Lala, John Hale, New Ply-
I mouth, 30gns.; pedigree cow, Primrose 28th, John Hale, New Plymouth, 33gns.; pedigree heifer, Silver Sultana, A. Uhlenberg, Midhirst, 40gns.; pedigree yearling heifer, Golden Primrose, H. L. Spence, New Plymouth, l,Bgns. ' The cows offered in the estate of E. Handley were in very poor condition and were not looking at all well, having been trucked through from South Taranaki. They realised: Pedigree cow Patch, H. B. Lepper, Lepperton, 31 gns.; pedigree heifer calf, J. Gleeson, Urcnui, 14gns.; pedigree cow, Primrose the Thirtieth, John Hale, New Plymouth, Signs.; pedigree heifer by Frisk Campanile, T. Church, Birkenhead, 20gns.; pedigree bull, Pi tail, G. Tipping, New Plymouth, 15 pus.; pedigree bull, Frisky Patch, W. H. Jury, New Plymouth, llgns.; pedigree bull, Prospero, fl. B. Lepper, Lepperton, 20gjis. F also offered, on account of Mr. J. Poletti, whose lease has expired, some very choice grade Jersey cows and heifers, which fetched very high prices after good competition, as follows:—Cow in milk £l4 10s, springing cows £l3 10s to £lO, empty heifers "£3 2s Od to £4 10s, very choice line of 2-yenr colored Jersey heifers £ll, grade bull £4.
On account of Mr. Jfi. J. Baker, a line of in-calf dairy cows sold at from £4 to £7 10s. On aocount of other vendors, very choice young dairy cows realised from £l2 to £lB, first-class £lO to £ll 10s, Rood £7 15s to £9 10s, aged £3 10s to £5 10s, very choice dairy heifers up to £l2, good up to £9 10s. Store cattle were yarded in good numbers, everything being cleared at the following rates: — Mixed yearlings £1 lis 6d to £3 Is 6d, empty 2-year heifers £3 9s to £4 15s (according to color), small 2-year steers and bad-colored £2 6s to £3 ss, aged cows £2, store cows £2 16s 6d to £3 16s, bulls £2 2s to £2 13s, 2-tooth ewes in lamb 13s.
At the Haymarket on Saturday pigs were yarded in bigger numbers than at recent sales. Bidding was very keen, realising:—Slips up to 19s, stores to £2 4s 6d, porkers (small) £1 15s, small weaners 7s to 10s, harness mare £l2 10s, set of harrows £4 17s <sd, gig (in good order) £l9. At TJrenui on Monday-1 had a fair entry, realising as follows:—F.M. ewes in lamb 10s lid to lis, hoggets 10s 3d, fat ewes 13s, yearling steers £2 9s 6d to £2 lCs 6d, 20-months to 2-year steers £3 Is to £4 (according to size and quality), store cows £2 16s 6d to £3 lis 6d, incalf heifers £4 12s 6d to £5 Os Bd, dairy cows from £5 to £8 10s,, springing heifers £5 10s to £6 17s 6d, buggy £33 ss. On the same day, in my Douglas yards, I had only a small entry, which realised, for dairy cows, from £7 10s to £lO, empty cows £2 18s, 20-months steers £3 lis, empty 2-year heifers £3 16s. At Tariki Road on the same day T held a clearing sale on account of Mr. H. R. Noble. I had an excellent attendance and good competition right through. The cattle were a choice lot, and some very high prices were obtained. Mr. Noble's cows averaged, with the exception of two three-teaters, £l4 2s 6d for the line; choice two-year springing heifers, £ls. £l3, £7. His yearling heifers (very well donel sold, after spirited bidding", at £9 15s,' £6, £4 17s 6d, £4; two choice cows were offered on account of Mr, T. Body, and were sold at £2B and £2O respectively. I supply prices obtained: Yearling heifers, £4 to £9 15s
(average £6 3s); two-year in-calf heifers, £7 to £ls (average £ll 13s 4d); dairy cows, £lO to £l7 10s (average £l4 2s fid); % cows. £5 to £6 ss; bull, £6; heifer calf, 30s; black gelding £25 ss; dray and frame, £l4 ss; bay roTe, £10; hay-rake, £5 ss; plo igh, £7. In my Stratford yards on Tuesday, 23rd, owing to the wet weather, stockdid not come forward up to advertised rumbers, but I hid a good entry, practically everything being cleared. Good empty 20 months to two-year heifers were in strong demand; yearling steers, £2 7s fid; yearling heifers, b'est £2 12s 6d to £3 6s, small £1 19s 6dj a nice line of 15 colored heifers and a yearling bull"sold readily at £3 10s 6d; bulls, ■£2 to £3 12s 6d; store cows, aged £l, good £2 12s to £3 10s; forward cows, £4 18s 6d to £5; fat cows, £6 4s; weaners, 15s; empty 20 months heifers, good £4 5s to £5, others £3 13s (Id to £3 19s; and a very choice line of two-year gTade Jerseys to a Kakaramea client at £5 6s.
On the same day at my Stratford yards I offered Mr. K. Hardley's herd. The cows had been driven from Tututawa and there was a good number of late calvers. Best early calvers brought from £8 15s to £ll 10s; others £0 5s to £7 ss; late calvers, £4 to £5 10s; springing heifers, £6 15s to £8 10s. Five Ayrshire cows on account of Mr. Oordon Townsend realised £lO to £l3; aged. £"). Guaranteed cows on account of other vendors sold at from £S to £l2 ss; late and aged. £4 15s to £7. At my Stony "River yards on Wednesday, 24th, the following prices were obtained:—Mixed yearlings, small 15s to
£1 13s 6d; yearling steers, £2 4s 6d to £2 15s; yearling Jersey-Holstein heifers, very choice £4 Os fid, others £2 16s 6d to £3 2s; empty 20 months heifers. £3 15s; 20 mollths steers £3 15s; store cows, £2 7a to £2 17s; springing heifers, £5 8s to £5 18s; dairy cows, £5 10s to £7 12s Cd; ewes in lamb, 13s. On the same day, in conjunction with the New Zealand, Loan Company, Hawera, I conducted Mr. R. H. Phillip's annual dispersal sale. The weather was decidedly wretched, and kept a big lot of buyers from South Taranaki away. The demand, 'however, was good for dairy cows-, but heifers were not so good. The vendor must be congratulated on the excellent quality of the cattle yarded. The dairy cattle were a very choice lot, especially the colored heifers. Dairycows sold at from £8 10s to £ls, springing heifers £6 to £l3 ss, and £l7 for an exceptionally choice heifer.
Paddock sales during the week have been very numerous, very good business having been done at the following rates: Yearling steers £2 15s, yearling heifers £2 17s -6d, empty two-year heifers £3 12s 6d to £4, three-year bullocks £6, 2'/ 2 to 3-year bullocks,' £4 15s to £5 ss, forward bullocks £7 2s 6d, fat bullocks £lO 15s, store cows £3 ss, forward cows £4 12s 6d, fat cows £6 5s to £6 10s; dairy cows £9 ss, £9, £8 10s, £8 Bs, £8 7s 6d, £B, £7 10s; springing heifers, three years, £8 to £9; choice line of 2-year Jerseys, £7 ss; fat wethers 18s 6d, forward wethers 16s 9d, stores 13s to 15s 4d, fat ewes 15s, hoggets from 9s 9d to 12s 3d, ewes in lamb from lis to 17s. MATTHEWS, BENNETT & CO.'S REPORT. Matthews, Bennett and Co. report that there was a fair yarding of cattle in, their Inglewood yards on Wednesday last. Prices were good and nearly every lot changed hands. Store cows made £2 15s to £3, weaners 38s to £3 2s 6d, dairy cows £5 to £7 ss. springers £4 15s to £5 15s, empty heifers £3 to £4. Mr. Geo. Haslett's cows fetched from £5 to £6 17s 6d. Private sales during the week were as follows:—Dairy cows £8 10s to £ll 10s, in-calf heifers £7 10s to £B, Jersey weaners ;C4 to £4 10s. f.m. ewes lis 2d to 12s to 13s 3d to 14s, hoggets 9s to 9s 6d to Us 6d, store wethers 14s to 16s, fat wethers 20s 6d. ADDINGTON. Fat lambs—Tegs made 17s to 20s Id, ordinary freezing weights 14s 6d to 16a 9d, light and unfinished 12s to 14s. Eat sheep—Extra prime wethers to 25s 4d, prime 20s to 23s 6d, lighter 15s 4d to 19s fid, extra prime ewes to 2fis, prime 18s to 23s 3d, others, 13s 9d to 17s 6d, merino wethers 15s 9d to 16s 3d, merino ewes 13s Id-. Fat cattle—Steers made £7 15s to £lO 10s, extra to £l4 2s 6d, heifers- £5 10$ to £9 15s, extra £l2 2s -6d, cows £5 5s to £9, extra £l2 2s 6d.
Store cattle —Yearlings made £1 7b fid to £1 17s fid, 15 to 18-month sorts £3 10s to £3 15s, three-year steers £5 15s fid, three-year heifers £4 10s to £4 17s fid, dry cows 30s to £4 17s fid. Dairy cows sold well, prices ranging: from £5 10s to £lO ss, extra to £l2 15s. Pigs—Choppers, which were in strong demand, made £3 15s to £7 Is fid, heavy baconers 60s to 70s, lighter sorts 50s to 57s fid (equal to 5y 2 d per lb). Heavy porkers realised 37s fid to 455, lighter 30s to 35s (equivalent to to s</ 2 d per lb). Store pigs were represented by » small entry, for which there was a strong demand, weaners of a good class being specially sought after". Large stores revised 30s to 3fis, smaller sorts 18s to 28s, weaners 12s to 14s 9d.
