BROKE! By Telegraph—Press Association. WerTmgton, Friday. A deputation from the Waihi Borough Council waited on Mr. Massey privately yesterday. The Council is not directly concerned in the strike as a party, but is affected very seriously by it. Most of its revenue was from gold -duties, and as there is no gold being won they get no duties, but they have to maintain the services of the borough. Exactly what the deputation asked was not disclosed. HOTEL THEFTS. Wanganui, Friday. In the Magistrate's Court this morning George Albert Wallingford, a young man aged 23, was charged with stealing various articles to the total value of £7O from the Metropolitan, Commercial and Parkville Hotels. Accused pleaded guilty, and was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence. At Patea on July 11 accused was sentenced to one month's imprisonment on a charge of stealing a gun-metal watch. THE TERRITORIALS. Wellington, Friday. A communication has been received locally from Colonel A. Keene, of the National Service League, congratu- | lating New Zealand on the stamp of i manhood contained in the Territorial I force. The letter contains an appreciation from Lord Roberts of the success 1 of the scheme bere, and goes on to say that when universal training is adopted in the Mother Country they will be able to show "plenty of good stuff, too; but there will be a deplorably large residuum of weaklings." SLOT- TELEPHONES. Christchurch, Friday., The earnings of the slot telephones in the city showed a marked increase as a result of the publicity given them lately. Last Tfeek four earned £4 IDs Bd.
