The following appointments wer« gazetted yesterday as Justices of tit* Peace:—Henry Ca'tley (New Plymouth), Alexander Cliristie (Manaia), Char-les Davies (Xormanby), Charles Sproull (Moeroa). Theodore Rigg, who (as reported by cable from London) has been awarded an ISSI Exhibitional Scholarship in science (chemistry) of the value of £l5O a year, tenable for two years, is the »oa of Mr. John Rigg, of John Rigg and Co,, of Wellington. Ho will leave on August 17 to enter Cambridge University. Mr. Isaac Hardley, who died in Hawera on Wednesday, was born at Whittlesea, Cambridgeshire, England, ■on March 13, 1834. On arriving in New Zealand thirty-nine years ago, Mr. Hardley went to Charleston, ou th« West Coast of the Middle Island, bui afterwards removed to Westport, whereha carried on business as a plumber and tinsmith. About seventeen yearg. ago he came to Hawera, where his sons, John and I. S. Hardley, had started ia. business in the same line. Mr. Hardley was- for 57 years a member of the Order of Oddfellows. He is survived by his- ' ■ wife and one daughter (Mrs. E. H. Patten, of Hawera), and by three sons, whoreside in Auckland. Mr. Hardley a!s©> . ~ leaves 25 grandchildren and 14 greatgrandchildren. J
