THE KING COUNTRY.
ROADING REQUIRED. .. s f - ' r "TtJ By Telegraph—Press Association. Te Kuiti, Last Night. The Minister of Public Works .received numerous deputations this afternoon and evening on road and railway matters. Mr. Scholes, the county chairman, urged the adoption of the subsidy system of grants. Settlers who were prepared to help themselves should be assisted. Mr. J. Boddie advocated that main roads should be pushed through. No district in the Dominion required such a iarge expenditure as the King country, owing to the great expansion of settlement. It was in the interest of the country that an active roading policy should be adopted. Mr. Eraser, replying, said that much! depended upon the amount placed at his disposal for expenditure. He had seen sufficient of the state of the district to impress on him the urgent need for roads. He could not say anything of the policy of the Government at present, but, ; all the work undertaken would be i put through quickly on economical lines. [He could not help thinking that much, money had been wasted through delay in [metalling, and also insufficient super- | vision. It appeared to be a cheap method to push through a great amount of formation and open up country, but it was really wasteful, as much work had f toi be done again before metalling. Every pound, saved meant a pound extra to put on .the roads. He intended after Parliament rose to go through the counjtry and make himself acquainted with f the needs of every district and the manner in which roading was conducted. He was not a man of many words, but preferred to be judged by what he accomplished. . v
