Lord Chelmsford has presented to Shepherd a silver medal from the King of Italy in recognition of his services rendered in the earthquake at Messina in December, 1908. Shepherd was then a sailor on the steamer Drake, which was off Messina, and assisted to dig out eighteen persons. THE INSIDIOUS COUNTER LUNCH. j Brisbane, July 24. Mr. Fisher is of opinion that Parliament has not been ilouted by the savings bank regulation, which frees the State from liability in case of fraudulent withdrawals. Mr. Hughes considers that the law in its present state is powerless to deal with the American Beef Trust. COMMONWEALTH CADETS. Melbourne, July 24. The examination of senior cadets in the Commonwealth reveals that 02.4 per cent, are fit. The examination at eighteen, prior to advancing to adult rank, shows that 84.7. per cent, are fit. COMPULSORY SERVICE. ' Sydney, July 24. There have been wholesale prosecutions of cadets in the metropolitan area for failing last year to render compulsory service. There were over five thousand summonses issued.
