FRAUDULENT WITHDRAWALS. By Cable—Pros* Association—Copyright. Melbourne, July 23. The regulations of the Commonwealth Bank Savings Department, as approved by the Governor-in-Council, repudiate the responsibility for fraudulent withdrawals, despite the fact that the Senate 'dealt with this class of the Bill and Mr. Fisher withdrew the motion of the House, disagreeing with the. Senate's amendment. AUTOMATIC TELEPHONY. Sydney, July 23. The automatic telephone exchange at Geelong is reported to be working fairly satisfactorily. Some subscribers have not yet mastered the system of turning the discs to secure the numerical combination required, but those able to operate the discs appear well satisfied, THE STATE SAVINGS BANK. Sydney, July 23. From August 1 the State Savings Bank raises the rate of interest to 3% per centum on deposits up to £3OO, and in excess of £3OO up to £SOO. the rate is 3 per cent. On the accounts of friendly societies and other similar institutions 3 3 /-> per cent, is paid up to £SOO. UNDERGROUND TRAMS. Sydney, July 23. Mr. Griffiths has announced that the Government has decided to adopt underground trams extending to Bondi Junction and under the harbor to Balmain. UNPUNISHED CRIMES. Sydney, July 23. Out of 8142 crimes reported to the New South Wales police in 1911, no arrests were made in 2901 cases. Including acquittals, the unpunished offences totalled 4615. A STRIKE AVERTED. Perth, July 23. The threatened strike in the companionship of the paper West Australian has been averted by an amicable settlement. MISSING BOYS. Melbourne, July 23. It is alleged that 10,000 boys- born in 1898 are not represented in compulsory training. The deficiency is largest in New South Wales, being 3613. The authorities are endeavoring to trace the boys, A CHAIR OF DAIRYING. I Sydney, July 23. The Farmers' Conference passed a resolution in favor of the establishment of a chair of dairying at the university. A YEAR'S PRODUCTION. Sydney, July 23. The Government Statistician reports that the production in factories and works last year increased £4,795,000, but raw material and fuel cost £2,182,OfKt additional, making the not value ;rdded bv the process of manufacture | 12,014,000.
