A MUNIFICENT SALARY.
To the Editor. Sir, —With reference to your leader irt to-day's issue, there are certain points to which I inust take exception. You appear to consider that the salary of £SO a year is too little, but, at present, cost of living, it seems to be quite a munificent sum, especially as the teacher' would he fed and not > required to- pay for board. I also think that tho Higln School Board is laboring under a misapprehension as to what they would require at this salary. It would suit a married couple, where the man could milk the cow, do the digging and the school garden, while the wife could grow ''rich beyond the dreams of avarice" by taking in the boarders' washing; cleaning out the school, attending- to cases of' mumps, etc. They might also specify that, at that salary, the man would be expected to be a competent blacksmith, plumber, carpenter, upholsterer and house-painter, so that he would be able to undertake any repairs to the school and furniture, thus enabling the Board to save money which they could devote to scholars-hips for those youths who would wi.-di to take up a University,, course and qualify for future positions, similar to this.—l am, etc., CANDID CRITIC,.
