GENERAL TELEGRAMS.
: THE OTA GO CENTRAL. By Telegraph—Press Association. Dunedin, Last Xieht. At a meeting of the Otago Central Railway League to-day it was decided to lenew efforts to have the line extended to Ilawea. THE TREASURE STEAMER. Dunedin, Last Night. The salvage steamer Wairoa, which was fitted out for the purpose of proceeding to the Auckland Islands to recover treasure lost in the General Grant, is now the property of .Stevenson and Cook, Port Chalmers, who have effected a settlement with the salvage syndicate, satisfied the claim of mortgage, and liquidated all debts on the vessel. The Wairoa is still at Port Chalmers, but it is understood that a northern firm is negotiating for the purchase of her. SALVING S.S. STAR OF CANADA. Gisborne, July 18. The salving of the Star of Canada depends almost entirely upon the work being carried out in the submerged No. 3 hold, which contained grain, lead and antimony. During the past week efforts have been concentrated on the clearing out of the grain, so that the antimony and lead could be reached, and also that the divers might be enabled to work from the inside of the vessel upon the plans for salvage which have been agreed upon. Right along some difficulty has been experienced by reason of the smell arising from the fermenting grain, but to-day new fumes arose, presumably from the antimony, which had an overpowering effect on those at work, one officer having to come ashore for attention. THE BUTTER TRADE. Auckland. July 18. An unusually large quantity of butter is held in store at Auckland this winter, and ihose responsible; for the regulation of the industry consider that there will he enough ami to spare by the time next season's supplies commeiu-e to come in from the factories. Whereas, at the end of July last; year, there were only about 12,>0 boxes in store at Auckland out of a total of 4417 boxes in the whole of the Dominion, local storage now totals 13.-188 boxes. The total held in New Zealand is recorded as 3!).0(li) boxes, and next to Auckland in point of quantity comes Wellington with 0345 boxes. Unless there is a late spring, it is apparent that a substantial surplus will be available for export after all local demands up to the opening of the next season have been supplied. This will probably go to London, in which market prospects for; sustained prices are fairly bright. The ] 912-13 dairying season is expected to commence in September.
