THE PARA ATROCITIES.
AX INDELIBLE BLOT. By Cable—Preßg Association—Copyright. Received 19. 11.35 p.m. London, July 19. Berlin newspapers, commenting on .Sir Soger Casement's report, assume that though none of the Putumayo murderers t Were British subjects they were white, and mostly Englishmen. They accuse the latter of murdering thirty thousand natives in six years. The Xfiiste Xachrichten and Reichsbote declare that the butcheries are an indelible blot on the British name, putting the Congo atrocities in the shade. Tie Germania attacks British Protestant Bible-lovers for calumniating Catholic Belgium in the Congo. A London cablegram, dated July 14, Bays: —A Blue Book contains a report from Sir Roger Casement, British Consul at Para, in which he specifically charges the agents of many Peruvian and Amazon companies with wholesale and unpunished atrocities, flogging British West Indians and native Indians who were collecting rubber, and inducing women and children to do so. cutting off ears, arms and legs, and leaving the victims to die, pouring kerosene over men and women and setting fire to thorn, and other unthinkable cruelties. Sir Edward Grey's demand to Peru for drastic measures of reform had no result beyond promises; hence the publicity.
