EMPIRE THEATRE. The current programme at the Empire Picture Theatre includes a special attraction in the shap of "Playmates," a pathetic story of the friendship and devotion of a faithful dog for his little master. A synopsis of the story is as follows:—The only child of wealthy parents, Ronald McCumber is obliged to entertain and amuse himself as best he can with his numerous toys, but longs all the time for living companions. One day he brings a dog home, and a great friendship springs up between them. Soon after Ronald is taken ill and his case baffles the skill of the specialists. The one and only hope for his recovery [ is rest, the fever and delirium making it impossible for him to secure it. The dog, after several unsuccessful attempts to enter the room and watch his little master, effects an entrance. The child becomes aware of the dog's presence, and at last falls asleep with his arm around his dear old dog. Acted and mounted in the Vitagraph Company's best style, this makes a magnificent film. Another excellent production is "The Ballet Dancer," while the comics are as usual strongly represented.
