HIGH SCHOOL BOARD

MONTHLY MEETING. 1 The High School Board of Governors met yesterday afternoon; present- The chairman (Mr. E. Dockrill) and Messrs. M. Fraser, H, Evre-Kenny, S. PercySmith and D. Hutdien. PRINCIPAL'S REPORT. Reporting to the Board, the principal of the school (Mr. W. H. Mayes) stated that the new boarding establishment was I opened on July 1, and it had proved to be m every way suited to the purpose I for which it was erected. The matron I | (Miss Setward, of Melbourne) took up her duties on July 7, and she had now charge of the domestic arrangements. The state of the weather had unfortunately interfered with the laying out of the grounds, and he would therefore sug-1 gest that the buildings be not thrown I o{ en for public inspection until the paths ' were gravelled. The fact that there was ' no early morning train into New Plymouth still continued to handicap the school. Many pupils who were anxious to attend were prevented from doing so because of the inadequate train service, j As the New Plymouth institution was the only endowed school in the province, i it seemed only reasonable that it should receive the same consideration as other endowed schools of the Dominion. He suggested that the Board should again approach the Minister for Railways with a view to getting an early train into the . town. i i

In a supplementary report, Mr. Moyes complained that the school building was badly leaking. The report* were adopted, and the matter of the leakage referred to the architect. Nothing was done regarding ■ the suggested improvement in the raif- \ way time-table. I GENERAL. j The chairman reported that by direction of the Board he had forwarded a testimonial to Mr. E. Pridham, late principal of the school. The Secretary of the Treasury forwarded £2G2 13s 6d, representing capitation payment on account of free pupils for the first term. A subsidy of £35 was received from the Education Department on account of the sum of £35 raised by voluntary subscriptions, in the shape"of the proceeds from the High School boys' entertainment. . On the application of the principal it was decided to leave the matter of purchasing an arc. lamp in the hands of Mr. S. Percy-Smith. The board has already decided to purchase a lawn-mower for use on the cricket ground, which has been re-sown in grass. Accounts amounting to £597 10s 7d were passed for payment.
