MitcEell won the toss and Faulkner' and Tancr.'d fi.ced Minnett and Whitty. I It was a disappointing start, as Faulk- i ner, after making five, played on. —One I for 24. White, in the next over, was taken at the wickets on the leg side.— Two for 25. Llewellyn hit two fours in 1 succession in the same over, and was then easily caught in the slips. —Three for 35. Whitty was bowling excellently and Minnett was at his fastest. The batting was quiet and the fielding smart. Hazlitt replaced Minnett at 47. Hazlitt's delivery was questionable. Nourse and Tancred saw 50 go up in 70 minutes. Nourse was bowled by a fast yorker in Hazlitt's third over.—Four for 56. There was a good deal of anxious and irresolute batting. Matthews replaced Whitty at 05 and got Tancred leg before. His innings was a mixture of good and bad play and lasted 105 minutes.—Five for u". Taylor and Strieker were now associated, and the best stand ensued. At the lunch adjournment the score was five for 90.
On resuming there were 5000 present. Whitty and Hazlitt were bowling. From Hazlitt's first over there were four byes and Strieker hit two fours, thus hoisting the century in 130 minutes. The breeze was helping the swing of both bowlers, but the batting was vigorous. Minnett replaced Hazlitt at 127. Fifty-one runs had been hit in the 30 minutes .since lunch. Matthews relieved Whitty at 135. Taylor, with a four on the on-side off Minnett, hoisted the 150 after 155 minutes. Kelleway replaced Minnett at 165. Kelleway got Strieker leg before after a dashing innings, which included nine fours and lasted 00 minutes. He gave a chance at 16. The partnership added 97 runs. Taylor had made 45.—Six for 171. Taylor made 52 in 100 minutes and received an ovation. Whitty replaced Matthews at 183. The second century occupied 200 minutes. Mitchell's middle stump went down to Whitty.—Seven for 203. Taylor continued scoring. Schwarz came in, but did not score.—Eight for 213. Taylor and Pegler were associated in a good stand for the ninth wicket. Hazlitt replaced Kelleway at 242. Pegler hit two fours in the same over, and was finely taken by Bardsley running from short leg. 1-Ie hit five fours and batted' 25 minutes. He gave a chance at 14. Taylor had made 83.—Nine for 250. Ward, the last man, kept up his wicket till Taylor was caught at long-on. He did some great driving. During his innings he gave three chances, batting for 280 minutes.
Jennings and Kelleway faced Nourse and Pegler. Misfortune came early, as Jennings was bowled by the fourth ball. —One for 0. Macartney did not last long, his off stump being taken by a ball from Nourse which kept low.—Two for 14. Nourse was difficult. The was good. _ Bardsley and Kelleway be° came associated next and play was very careful. Schwarz replaced Pegler at 32, and 50 went up in 65 minutes. Faulknet relieved Schwarz at 65 and Pegler took the ball from Nourse. Kelleway was ironically applauded each ball. He was m for a ihundred minutes, giving a chance at 24, but the batsmen were not separated. The score was two wickets for 86 when stumps were drawn.
