STORMY WEATHER.
A CHEERING FORECAST! By Telegraph—Prass Association. Wellington, Last Night. The cyclonic system has enveloped the whole country, with the barometer lower in the north. Heavy rain has fallen in many parts, especially on the east coast of the South Island, with much snow on the higher levels. High northerly winds have been experienced in the north and south, to south-easterly gales in parts elsewhere. Present indications are for westerly winds, strong to a gale, veering to southerly northward of New Plymouth and Napier, and south-easterlies, strong to a gale, prevailing elsewhere. Heavy rain is probable generally, with snow on the higher levels, and hail squalls in parts. The weather will be much colder soon, and the barometer will be rising everywhere shortly. Expect very heavy seas and rivers flooded, on the east coast of the South 1 dand especially.
THE GALE IN WELLINGTON. Wellington, Last Night. Rain fell heavily all day in Wellington, and continues to-night. The Hutt river is in high flood. The train which left for Wairarapa this afternoon is returning to Wellington in consequence of a land slip on the llimutaka incline. The train which left Woodville at 2.15 was stuck up by a landslip and a washout, and had to return.
RAILWAY INTERRUPTION.
'Masterton, Last Night,
Heavy northerly rains have fallen in this district during the last twenty-four hours, over three inches being registered. The rivers have overflowed and siftmerged the low-lying country, and many slips are reported. The train service south of Masterton is suspended tonight, owing to a slip having come down on the Rimutaka incline, and a washout having oecuived between Featherston and Woodville.
THE GALE IST AUCKLAND.
Auckland, Tuesday.
A very heavy gale last night delayed the departure of the Maheno for Sydney from 11.5 p.m. till 1 a.m. The wind was so strong that the vessel, after leaving her berth at the Queen street wharf, was carried up the harbor, and might have gone aground had not a line been' got ashore to Hobson street wharf. The gale moderating, she, hacked out and steamed down the harbor.
CANTERBURY'S EXPERIENCE,
Christchurch, Tuesday.
The weather continues extremely bad and the rivers are again high. There has been a heavy snowfall in the back country to the north. Telegraph lines are interrupted.
