THE NEW ZEALAND CHAMPIONSHIPS.
By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. The New Zealand amateur boxing championships commenced to-night. Owing to the pouring wet night the attendance fell considerably below expectations. Among those present were Sir Joseph I Ward, General Godley, Drs. Izard and j O'Brien. The referee was Mr. T. Samp-! son, the other officials being Messrs. H. Sharplin and R. Cooke (judges), Messrs. A. Laurention and L. W. Ludwig (timekeepers), Drs. Gilmer, Herbert, Tolhurst, and Harding (medical officers). The matches proved very interesting, some bouts being very evenly contested. The results up to 11.45 are as follows: Light-weight.—R. Simpson (Christchurch) 9.11% beat "Spi Thomas (Otaki) 9.9; North (Otago) 9.13 beat Havill (Manawatu) 9.12. Heavy-weights.—P. Cauldwell (Wagamii) 13.1 beat Cole (Manawatu) 12.4; McQuarrie (Southland) 12.0 beat Bartlet t (Christchureh) 12.5. Feather-weights,—T. Thomson (Southland) 8.13 beat Leary (Wellington) 8.10: A. Jervis (Manawatu) 8.12 beat E. T. Gun-dry (Ashburton) 9.0; McKenzie (Auckland) 8.13 beat Lane (Otago) 8.12. Welter-weights.—H. Withy (Otago) beat E. Murine (Wellington); Hogan (Wanganui) 10.7 beat Gundry (Christchurch.) 10.6.
. G. Cate (Gisbornei 10.13 beat J. Hughes (Southland) 11.1: Finnie (Wellington) 11.3% beat Dalziel 1 (Manawatu) 11.2.
Bantams.—McMorrin (Christchureh) 8.1 beat Oliver (New Plymouth) 8.1. Tim Tracy wag in the interval presented with a framed illuminated address and a diamond ring for Mrs. Trac\\ on the occasion of his leaving the pugilistic ring.
It was ascertained on the eve of the big Johnson-Flynn 'battle that the terms of Johnson's contract with Hugh D. Mcintosh for an Australian contest are on a grand scale. Johnson has contracted to fight Sam Langford and to be matched against Sam McVea. The champion will get £9OOO for both battles, which are to take place within six months. Johnson will leave Vancouver for Australia in September. Before clinching the contract Johnaon wanted to wait till after his battle with Flynn, but finally said that he was so sure of winning that it did not matter whether he waited or not. The aontract was thereupon signed.
