' Mr. J. Petrie, of the Auckland Star, is on a visit to New Plymouth. Mr. J. A. Hanan. who was Minister of Justice and Education in the Mackenzie Government, is making a brief stay in Taranaki. Mrs. Maria M. Walker, aged 84- years, an inmate of the Old People's Home, died yesterday. Mrs. Walker came from Wait'ara. Mr. J. B. Hine, M.P., returned to Stratford last night. Mr. C. K. Wilson, M.P. for Taumarunui, was a passenger by the same train to New Plymouth. Mr. Edward Hoby, eldest son of Mr. 0. Hoby, of Smart road, died recently from malaria at Beira, Portuguese East Africa, where he has been residing for some years.
Mr. W. J. Hill, of the literary staff of the Wellington Evening Post, and formerly of New Plymouth, has received an appointment on the staff of the New Zealand Herald, Auckland. Mr. Clias. Ahier, of New Plymouth, who is re-visiting his native land, the Island of Jersey, after an absence of fifty years, has received a grand reception. He has been interviewed and snapshotted by the newspapers there, the majority of which are published in French, though there are several English papers. His visit should certainly tend to make New Zealand known in Jersey almost as much as the Jersey cow has familiarised Taranaki residents with the name of the beautiful Channel island. Mr. Ahier has also addressed two meetings, in his native land, on New Zealand. He will leave on his return in October.
