CHAIRMAN OP COMMITTEES. When the Mackenzie Government was in ollice the position "of of Committees was offered by the Prime Minister to Mr. T. 11. Davey, member for Christchurch East. Mr. Davey declined the position under the circumstances, but this does not indicate his disinclination to stand for election at the proper time, which will be immediately the House resumes. His personal popularity and the capable way he has temporarily filled the chair on many occasions, should combine to secure splendid support for him. His most important rival will probable be Mr. A. S. Malcolm, who lias represented Balclutha .since 1905, and is considered to have such strong claims to his party's consideration, that the chairmanship should foe his as an alternative to ministerial rank. If the Government party is unanimous he will be elected, but Mr. Davey has at least a fighting chance, for the "solid thirty-eight" cannot put in Mr. Malcolm unless they carry their new adherents with them.
