i Mora rur Tvpsident Ueportex. '•H.M.S. PINAFORE." "Plays may come and plays may go; our plays go on for ever." ' Gilbert and Sullivan would have almost been justified in altering Tennyson's beautiful poem, 'The Brook," to read as above. Their name is a household name, although some of their musical comies are so old, and have 'l>»en played thousands of times, they avestill appreciated as much to-day j as the day they were first performed. I The Stratford Operatic Society could not have done better than choose an opera written by these collai)or?,tcur.s. Judging, by the manner in 'Which the rehearsals are going off. it is quite certain that "H.-M.S. Pinafore" is going to lose none of its attractions and beauty by being performed by this society. The performance is going to be given on a magnificent scale, with scenery specially imported. It will give some idea of the size of the scenery when we mention that every available bit of space on the stage has had to be used to get it all on. The society is sparing no expense to make the opera one of the finest, ever given in Stratford. The second scene in "H.M.S. ■ Pinafore" is worthy of special mention. It is night, His Majesty's ship Pinafore is lying at anchor in Portsmouth Harbor,, and one looks from the deck across the still water and beholds the city by night with its myriads of lights twinkling across the harbor. It is a beautiful, picture, and worth going a long way to see. Special arrangements are being made to light this scene. The society every credit and a bumper house as a : reward for the enormous expense and ; trouble it has gone to. We do not doubt for a moment that the Town' Hal- will be packed from floor to ceiling on Thursday and Friday evenings, to witness the performance. The prices, are just as popular as the play, 3s, 2s:.and<ls, and dress circle seats may be reserved at Mr. T. G. Grubb's music warehouse.'

Leatham arrived by last night's train from New T Plymouth to temporarily take' charge ; of Dr.' Facet's' practice during the latter's short holiday. Dr. Leatham has known Stratford-prac-tically from its infancy, and is hardly likely to forget one trip, at.least in-the early days, when he was called from New Plymouth to attend a case at. Norrnanby, on the railway construction works. - The journey, down occupied / nearly "twelve hours by train, trolley, and horseback, through nealy-felled bush, Stratford being then the end of the train service, and . the trolley being available only as far as Ma'ngawhero. • ■ *..,-..:..,-
