NORTH v. SOUTH. A WIN FOR THE NORTH. j TARANAKI MEN SCORE. j By Telegraph—Press Association. Napier, Last Night. The North Island v. South Island Rugby football match was played on Saturday afternoon in beautiful weather, and in the presence of an enthusiastic crowd, estimated at a little short of five thousand, including many country people and a number of visitors from different parts of New Zealand. The game resulted in a win for the North bj 12 points to 8. After the recent rain the ground was a bit heavy and slippery in places. Lack of combination was noticeable in the South Island team in the early stages of the game, and except that the North Island forwards were slightly better than the South, the teams were fairly evenly matched. There is no doubt that the better team won.
About eight minutes after the game started, E. Roberts (Taranaki) scored the first try behind the posts. O'Leary converted. North 5, South nil. Twenty minutes later, Alexander (South) got over the line, and Doell converted from a difficult angle. Jvprth 5, South 5. Towards the end of the first half, Alexander again got over as a result cf a Southern rush, but DoeU failed to add the major points. South 8, North 5. Soon after the second half commenced, Stohr scored for the North, but O'Leary's attempt to convert was a failure. North 8, South 8. When half-way through the spell McKenzie potted a neat goal for the North, the match ending: North 12, South 8.

The third match between the New Zealand team and New South Wales was played yesterday in slush and during continuous rain, before an attendance of 8000. New South Wales played with good combination, and shjjwed good passing, considering the weather conditions. They played with determination from the start, the forwards obtaining the ball from the scrum oftener than the visitors. The defence of both teams was sound. The New Zealanders did not follow the tactics that they displayed in the previous match against New South' Wales, and did not indulge in so much footwork until later, when they made some good rushes. The teams were as follows:
New Zealand. Full, Hargreaves; three-quarters, Weston, Bradley, Carlaw; five-eighths, Moir and Curran; half, Barber; forwards, Evans, Irvine, M. Ha v. j ward, Rukutai, King, H. Hayward. * i New South Wales. The try was not converted. From a free kick for off-side play Messenger landed a goal, and at the end of the spell Messenger repeated the performance. New South Wales were unable in the second spell to cross their opponents' line, 'but from a free kick for lying on ( the 'ball Messenger kicked a goal. The' New Zealand forwards rallied half-way through the spell, when Broomham picked the ball up from a forward rush, but was downed and the ball carried over, M.
