PARIHAKA ROAD BOARD.

The monthly meeting of the Parihaka Road Board was held at Rahotu on Thursday, when there were present;— ' Messrs; Jas. Young (chairman), •T. Leahy, J. Ducker, T. Harvey and P. Willeox. FOREMAN'S REPORT. The foreman (Mr, J. P. Kennedy) reported that the Egmont County crusher had been at work iind had crushed 112 yards of metal on the lower Kahui road, and 154y 3 yards on the Upper Kahui road'. The cost of crushing, including hire, feeding, and spreading on the road was 3s (id per yard. It also cost 2s per yard to get the stone ready for th« crusher, and he did not consider the results satisfactory. On the Lower Kahui road 22 chains of drain had been cleaned out at a cost of 2s 9d per chain. On the Upper Kahui road a bridge had been [replaced by a pipe culvert, and a pipe culvert had also been put in near Mr. Tylee's. The worst parts of the road had been repaired, but from jfche Wiremu upwards l three men and a dray would be required for a week. The Warea road had been breaking up considerably, and had taken much time and labor. Work was now stopped, but further repairs were required should the board grant assistance. On the Ihaia road repairs were were still under way. Fur ther repairs were needed, but "at thi* time of the year it was difficult to obtain stone. The Te Namu road was alsfr being attended to. The financial state of the Warea road was discussed, and it was ascertained, that it was £2OO overdrawn. The foreman was given to understand that, bad holes on this or any other road must b« attended to. Mr. Magon is also to be written,to and asked to discontinue damaging the road. A week's work was granted on the Kahui road. Work is to be done on the Cape road equal to the amount previously passed for crushing, and Messrs. Willeox and Harvey were authorised to make final arrangements re damage to the road by the County Council contractor.

A special order in reference to the Turu road loan was formally dealt with. In response to a deputation consisting of Messrs. Cross and Ashley, re the state of the Opua road, it was'resolved that from £ls to £2O be spent where necessary.

Mr. Hoskin complained of the nuisance suffered' by him owing to the road board employees breaking'down a bar-way on the Namu road so as to graze their horses 1 in his paddock. The foreman pointed out that it was not the road board who were to Mame, and Mr. Hoskin will be written to to this effect.

The wages of the remainder of the board's road staff were raised from 8s to 9s (some were already receiving 9s). It was also decided, after the Ihaia road work is completed, that the casual hands be dispelled with. Mr. Willcox brought up the question of the interest, £l2 8s 2d. payable on the small loan on the Ngariki road. He considered it unfair that eight settlers 6houW pay for the benefit of the whole, and suggested that a special rate should he struck over the whole equal to the interest. The chairman,suggested that the additional 10 per cent, be utilised and the matter vv as then referred to the board's solicitor.

Mr. Sinclair was granted permission tolay pipes on the Opua road, and Mr. Coombcs to erect a guard fence on the Kina road.

On the application of Mr. P. Brophy, work to the extent of £lO will be dose on the lower end of the Bayly road, and * settler on that road is to be informed that tlio board will not allow any water to ba dammed' back on to the roa<i.

Mr. Julian's offer to cart metal with his team for two days, provided the board provide a team and spreader for one day, was accepted. The question of the encroachment of the Pungarchu road was discussed, and it was resolved, on the motion of Mr. Willcox, that the board pay Messrs! Crisp and Symons Bros. £25 per acre nml put back the fence, the matter or royalty not to be considered. Members were of opinion that Mr. Crisp had agreed to waive the claim of royalty when the metal was taken. The clerk was instructed to offer the Publi«Trustee the land not required by the board at the same rate as the board pay to Messrs. Crisp and Symons Bros.— Abridged from the Opunake Times.
