I inuiu cur UVsident Reporter. ) MUNICIPAL BRASS BAND. CITIZEN'S MEETING. i Tlie public meeting to consider the | affairs of Uie Stratlord Municipal Brass | Band was held on Thursday evening, 1 and wad fairly well attended by the public. The bandsmen were present in | force. The Mayor, Mr. W. P. Kirkwood, ! presided. Apologies were received from j Councillors Ward, J. H. Thompson, and 'J. McAllister, the latter suggesting that interest might be created by enrolling honorary members. The report submitted by Mr. T. Marshall, secretary, stated that it was now ten months since the band was reformed, and it had been a very up-hdll struggle, but perseverance and steady progress by members had brought a marked change. The band was fortunate in' securing the services of so able and painstaking a conductor as Mr. D. Henderson, and to him every credit was due for the present nosition of the band. But circumstances necessitated his change of residence, and, consequently, his resignation from the position of bandmaster. The members must be congratulated on their loyalty and combined | effort to establish a brass band worthy of the town. The band filled a number of engagements with credit to themselves and to the conductor. The band had not appeared in our public Domain as often as they would h-\ ■:•? wished, hut ■this is accounted for by the number of pupils in the ranks who were not advanced far enough to appear in public. It was hoped that the programme for the coining summer months would make amends for the past. Thanks were accorded' Messrs. H. Childs and H. Rurmester in connection with the erection recently of a practice room in Curtis Avenue. A word of appreciation of the assistance given by the Borough Council and a hope for similar treatment in the future, a complaint of the poor instruI ments* used by the band, and then the' i report concluded-w:ith ..an appeal to the, [public for support. Enthusiasm and sympathy on their part would do much to help the bandsmen, "who are actuated by one ambition—the advancement of brass-banding in our towji." Mr. T. Marshall, secretary, submitted the report' and balance-sheet. The Mayor said the band was deservuhg of the support of the public! On the other hand, it'was necessary that the ' band should give a' quid pro quo. Per!hap=> this band had not done as much for the public as the public wished. The band had been most unfortunate in losing its conductors just as it was attaining a fair degree of efficiency. A \ few public performances might be ; ap- ) predated. J Mr. N. J. King considered the band | had done well, although they''had had a hard row to hoe. They had been par- ! ticularly unfortunate in losing their ) conductor at a time when lie- had just j done good work with them. ' The roving nature of the young fellows was also a ( deterrent. Still the band was as well ? situated to-day as ever it had been. He-] regretted that the townspeople were not j present in larger numbers, and ;said the band had never beeii supported by the public as it should have been. He con'gtatulated the band on the excellent I report brought down, and hoped that the ' public would ta-ke a keener • interest in ! its welfare. f Mr. J. B.
