FLOODS IN OTAGO.
FARMERS THREATENED. By Telegraph—Press Association. Dunedin, Last Night. The extremely beavv rains which have Fallen on the Taieri "Plain and on the high country at the back right up to Midillcmareh, since Wednesday, have resulted in a big rise in the Taieri river, and present indications point to the likelihood of a serious flood on the plain. The downfall is the heaviest that has been experienced for four years, and large quantities of surface water already cover a portion of the plain. The settlers on low [rround are busy removing their stock to higher country. The rain still continues, and since five o'clock to-night the river at On tram has risen eight feet, but the worst effects will not be" felt for another six or seven hours. At Middleinarch the river is'a quarteT I of a mile wide, and has risen six inches between ten and eleven o'clock to-night.
