t >. WELLINGTON SENTENCES. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Wednesday. A number 1 of prisoners appealed before the Chief Justice for sentence to-day and, were dealt with as follows. Edward Alexander Repin, for breaking, entering and theft at Stratford, was sentenced to twelve months' imprisonment and declared an habitual criminal; Talsopa Kimihanga, 'for theft at Hastings, was sentenced to eighteen months' imprisonment; John Manaia, for forgery and uttering in Taranaki, to eighteen months' imprisonment; Frederick William Williams and George Hewitt, for wilfully damaging two motor launches at Haveloek, received five and four months' imprisonment respectively; John Harvey, for theft at Stratford, received eighteen months' imprisonment and was declared an habitual criminal. In the case of James Moore, aged 56, late office cleaner at Wanganui Post Office, charged with theft, the Chief Justice said that the prisoner appeared to have" opened the letters to secure betting information. He* (Sir Robert. Stout) considered that the PostmasterGeneral's recent regulation th&t officers in his department who went in for gambling should be dismissed was a. very proper regulation. The department occupied a -position of public trust, and_ it could not be expected to be efficient if its employees were allowed to drink and gamble. A sentence of nino months' imprisonment was imposed.
