THE KAITAXGATA STRIKE. By Telegraph—Press Asaoeiatioi. Dunedin,, Last Night. The directors of the New Zealand Coal and Oil Company have replied to a deputation of the Otago Coal Miners' Union (Federation of Labor) upholding their previous decision not to recognise this body as the other union was registered, under the Arbitration Court. A meeting of the men last week threatened "more drastic steps'" if recognition was refused. A.further meeting of tkft men will be held immediately to decide upon a course of action. . THE TROUBLE IN TIMARU. Timaru, Last Night. The wharves at this port are worked by the Railway Department receiving goods into and delivering from the trucks and supplying men for the trucks. The Waterside Union (Federationist)" gave notice of refusal to work with two of these men who declined to join, the union, being members of the Railway , Servants' Society. The stationmaster could do nothing except keep the two men from the wharf, as the Department declined 'to give preference to the unionists. _ The notice was to take effect this morning, and without waiting to see whether the two men were to be employed the unionists did not t'-ro up. The steamer Petone was discharging coal, and she went away to Lyttelton. The Te Anau came in ready for work at 1 p.m,, but nothing was done. The rain, however, may have excused that. The visit of the steamer Storm has been cancelled, and others have been warned ! ! to look out for instructions in the morn- " mg. It is expected, however, that the men will resume in the morning.
