TURF TOPICS. (Jy "Moturoa.") Horse owners with .equines engaged at the Wellington winter meeting were in a generous mood when acceptances fell due on Monday evening, and the fields | carded for next week's races are excep- { tionally large. It is pleasing to note that many Taranaki horses have been paid up for, including Paritutu, Compass and Zante in the Wellington Steeplechase; Darby Paul, Sandy Paul and Bismarck in the Winter Hurdle Race; Mulga Bill and Royal Arms in the Parliamentary Handicap; and Crown Pearl, Patriotic, Ngatiruanui and Piriwai in the minor events. The racing next week . should be full of interest to Taranaki ' sportsmen. The field for the Wellington Steeplechase has hecn reduced to fifteen, but quality is there, and everything points to « keen race. Hautere has been paid up for in preference to his stable-mate Okaihau, and probably the latter will I be the elect Of J. Williamson's pair for the Grand National Steeplechase. Despite rumors to the contrary, Whakaweira and Antarctic have had their engagement continued. The hurdler Black Northern remains in, and should be well able to jump the big country. The feature of the betting market is the backing coming for Compass. The old horse certainly got round at Wanganui, but he took a good view of the country, and his finish was somewhat belated. Coupled with Darby Paul for the Winter Hurdles the double is alleged to have ltee* snapped up wherever procurable in Wei-' lington. The writer would have to see old Compass show very much improved form before investing. Of the light- J weights the Riccarton-trained Master i Paul has been jumping well, but he is j sueb a tear-away brute that difficulty may be experienced both in holding him back at the beginning and punching; him forward at the finish. The Lupin Kurt Lugeon won nicely at the Dunedin meet- j ing last month, but may not be class enough for Trenthani. Zante is said to! be in good nick, but has, as yet, hardly j any pretentions to open steeplechase winning. |
Black Northern also figures in the Winter Hurdle Race, with list 131b, and reads badly alongside The Native 10.G, Darby Paul 9.3, .and Sandy Paul 9.3. On Gisborne form,. Master Theory lo,oks to hold Paisano safe. Another promising hurdler engaged is Bollin, who won at Napier recently. The issue looks very open.
Jockey B. Deeley's luck was out; at Gisborne, arid "he' was only up on : one winner, Rising Sun, Deeley's total of winning rides is now 88, and with only one meeting to go his chance of putting up a new, record is a very doubtful one. The-Gisborne meeting was a remarkable one in iome respeets. Jockey A, McFlyntr, in five rides over sticks, won, five times. .The Auckland trainer Dfenny •Moraglism Jrook.'three • horses—Admiral Soult, Master .Theory and Taialia,'—to the meeting, and each won a race jeacli da)'. To gather in six out of" thirteen' events carlcd"tvtis no mean performance. The gift horse Armagh woij : a double in .frrie! and his traitier-' owner, J. Williamson, will soon have'the appellation- '-^Luck-y—prefixing his nnjriie. Williamson's horses, Okaihau, Hautere and--Armagh- ha-vfc'won six steeplechases in as many "wfeeks, the Great Northern and . Gisborne" Park Steeplechases ' in : eluded. f- 1 '
