POLITICAL NOTES.
One conspicuous feature of the Opposition triumph, says the Wellington Times, was the absence of any demonstration in the House itself. The only incident that betrayed exuberance of feeling was provided by Mr. B. Dive, exM.P. for Stratford, who was defeated last November by the fallen Prime Minister himself. When the division numbers were announced Mr. Dive could restrain his jubilation no longer, and, seizing a blue paper, he waved it aloft in excitement and glee. Several ladies in the House appeared to be on the point of giving vent to their satisfaction, but Mr. Massey calmed them with hia uplifted hand and a deprecatory "Sh-»h!"
In view of Mr. F. M. B. Fisfrer'g declaration to the electors a few months ago —that he would not accept a portfolio in a freehold Cabinet—it is not considered likely that lie will be offered a position in the new administration? says the New Zealand' Times. There is something else in store, however, for the member for Wellington Central. He has made himself very useful to Mr. Massey recently, and as a reward for "services rendered" it is understood he will be offered the Chairmanship of Committees, which carries with it a salary of £6OO per annum.
