SOWING THE SEED. Australasia is too absorbed in domsstic problems to read "the writing on v the wall." It is empty, undefended and impotent. It presumes because it is told by a certain class of self-advertiser that it may assume the insolence of great I powers, that it has all the people it wants, and that itis powerful to defend itself. It has a habit of dictating to its grandfather, of advising the earth and of presuming that because a dozen r*«n demand a white Australia that ths myriads of the outside world will obey. A while ago a foreign princess went to Australia. She had a servant of Asiatic origin. The Commonwealth suspended the Aot prohibiting the entry of Asiatics ia order tint this lady might have a holiday and bring her Asiatic servant. The princess and her servants wera not allowed to come to New Zealand. In the Commonwealth lately- a half-caste Fijian lady, who is the wife of a white Britisher, was refused admission to the Commonwealth pending enquiries. The only possible reason that could have been for preventing this lady or any other woman of dark blood from entering the Commonwealth was that she might stay there, and rear a family who would not be "white Australians." The fact that there was no such intention does not matter. It may bo here stated without equivocation or excuse that there is no hope now or at any future 'time for a white Australia. It is not white now, and it never will be. The only point of any importance in relation to all Pacific lands is that they are empty, and they need population. If the white man cannot or will not supply population, the Asiatic will. It is inevitable that waste lands must be made productive. Nature does not care who makes them productive, and the dark man won't starve if he can help it. Both Australia and New Zealand are controlled by small coteries of extremists who work on the dog-in-the-manger principle. These coteries are not only in antagonism to the Asiatic but also to the over-sea white man. Neither in Australia nor New Zealand is there any real desire or intention to attract white population. The late New Zealand Government declined to listen to the repeated demands of employers for imported skilled labor. The Commonwealth Prime Minister has said that the six-hours-day is a modest idoal. There will be no "knock-off" whistle when the Asiatic comes along to avenge the repeated and studied insults that have been heaped on him through the long years. New Zealand is already talking about a four-hours-day, quarrels about the introduction of a few boys, sends 390 applicants for 17 sections at a land ballot, and remains perfectly and supremely indifferent to everything that is happening outside its territory. We mention the applicants for land as an illustration of the stupid method of not satisfying potential settlers. There will come a time when land will be taken without balloting and not by white men. In Australasia the people wh'o unfortunately control affairs have decided on retrogression. They plan to do less work. They plan to keep the population at the lowest possible ebb. They have already reduced the efficiency of the worker by deciding that craftsmanship is shameful and that work is dishonorable. The Asiatic nations which have, been shaking themselves and rubbing the dust out of their eyes have no conscientious scruples about working for a boss; they have no foolish notions about a four-hours-day, no idiotic disposition to call out a million workers because Ah Hang has got the sack, and nc idea of restricting tho birth-rate so that the adult shall get an easy job. A Sydney contemporary wonders what Nemesis will overtake Australasia in the future. The finest thing that could happen to bring the disgruntled alleged "worker:" to their senses would bo foreign threats. The pointed demand ( > f Japan or China for space for 50.00" Asiatics would heal the wounded heartof the idiots who believe the finest th'iuthat could happen is to,,,work four hour? a day. The .necessity to face a ]■<>;>.:

emergency would knock the talking of twaddie sky-high. The nations that have to invent grievance* (need real grievances to bring them to a sense of their great advantages. The old fact is here repeated. There are about five hundred million Asiatics of varying hues crowded into countries that do not provide them with square meals. There are 4% million white men who protest that they have too few advantage* in countries that could support one hundred millions. It is inevitable that their right to occupation will be questioned sooner or later. Meantime, they go out of their way to throw bricks at any passing darky. The trouble is that the darky's brick is the larger.
