DISTRICT NEWS.

¥AKETAWA. (From Our Own Correspondent.) The weather during the past month lias been of the proper winter description, and the few fine days were much appreciated. Bitterly cold winds, "heavy rain, and on the upper portions of the roads, snow and hail, have occurred with monotonous frequency. Those farmers whose cows are coming into profit already are congratulating themselves wn having a good supply of stack fodder in conjunction with turnips, the latter crop, contrary to, early indications, in the majority of cases, having turned out fairly well. By present signs at time of writing another liberal supply of heavy weather is close at hand. The Durham creamery is receiving milk every third day, and I understand that several farmers expect a large number of cows in very soon, which should enable the creamery to keep going tire whole season. Generally, indications are for a very early start this season. Casein seems to be causing a great deal of discussion, but it is doubtful \if the venture will attract much support this way. The report of the expert appointed by the Agricultural Department ment to obtain precise information as to markets, price, etc., should be very interesting, and will no doubt tend to settle the doubt as to permanency or otherwise of those two important fac- , tors.

The heavy weather "had been playing "old Harry" with the roads, and the repairs bill in many cases will represent n big item. Firewood carting, also, will account for considerable damage. The arrangements made whereby the "Xews" can be delivered more regularly to readers are much appreciated. Having one's news fresh is a consideration that should appeal to those in the country who wish to keep themselves in touch with the happenings outside, and, on the other hand, the advantages from the'-advertiser's view should.be greatly enhanced.

Considerable speculation has ibeen going on recently as to the cause of a very large quantity of rice on the Durham road railway station platform, and it appears that the principals in a wedding party from Inglewood, thinking to avoid a demonstration, drove to the local station to catch the train. Their friends, it seems, got wind of the scheme, and' travelled from Inglewood per train to Durham road, where the happy couple received a great ovation 'iuid a "ton of rice" to start them on their honeymoon.

ITiio fortnightly dances held in the Durham school are receiving splendid support. Tlie affair ori Friday evening i' last, proved very enjoyable, and a large number attended. The cessation of the amusement in small country places would cause an ugly void, as the meeting to- ) gether once a fortnight of the younger 1 neighbors is a break in the monotony of ! fanij life. More of the kind should be I instituted." ... J ; : KORU. ■••■ " .' .
