J VAKIOUS MATTERS. I What is hoped will be a final settle- ' ment of the Leach street question is em- ] bodied in the report of the Works Com- } mittee to be presented at to-night's meet{in g of the Borough l Council. The committee recommends that the Mayor be authorised to "arrange with the Railway Department for the settlement of the difficulty upon the following terms:— | (I) The Railway Department to isaue a I proclamation declaring the lands in ques.J -£Son (including the portion along the ) centre of Leach street formerly used as a railway line) to be vested in the council as streets; (2) the council to pay to the Railway Department the sum of £265, less the estimated cost of closing Leach street deviation and Lot D, Eliot street, and the costs of effecting the sale thereof. That upon a settlement being definitely arranged with the Railway Department the Mayor* bei authorised to accept the offers received for the portions of Leach street deviation and Loi D, Eliot street, and to take such steps as may be necessary for the conveyance of the land to the purchasers. The report of the Works Committee recommends that the Council offer no objection to Inspector Tippins acting as honorary inspector for the Pukekura Park Board, his duties to the borough, however, to remain his first care. The Works Committee will also table the following ' recommendations: That the owner of the Imperial Hotel be notified to move back -the supports of the balcony on the Currie street frontage of the hotel, in accordance with a plan to be prepared by the borough engineer. arid that the width of the footpath be reduced accordingly; (2) that Messrs. C. Buchanan and T. Colson be informed that they are expected to cut back their verandahs in accordance with the notices already given to them. Residents will note with pleasure that proposals for increased' street lighting will be placed before the Borough Coun- , cil this evening bv the Works Committee, which body will recommend: That after the new machines are installed the electrical engineer be authorised to inetal the following'street lights:—Smith, road, Carrington road (between SeTwyn street and Holdsworthy road), Holdsworthy road and Norman street, George street and Carington road. Victoria road and Geoge street, St. Aubyn street (between Eirmont and Queen streets, railway station gate (fitting for four 50 c.p. lamps), Ariki street (between Brougham and Egmont streets, one 100 c.p. lamp), Devon street (between Brougham and Cnrrie streets, for four 100 c,r>, lamps). Currie street (near goods shed, one 100 c.p. lamp), Devon street (between Watson street and Henui bridge).
