THE EDUCATION COMMISSION

SITTINGS CONCLUDED. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wanganui, Last Night. The Education Commission concluded its sittings -this evening. Evidence was given by Mr. Varney (vice-principal of the Technical College), who urged the importance of vocational training, and pleaded for the co-operation of employers with technical authorities. Mr. Swanger, secretary of the Wanganui Education Board, spoke of the Board's administrative methods, and the various ways in which the Department imposed unnecessary work on education boards. Mr. Lee Martin, representing labor organisations, declared that evening classes would not be successful so far as boys apprenticed to trades were concerned, as the boys were too brain and body weary to study properly. He urged that employers should give time off to allow day study, which should be compulsory, the State compensating employers to a certain extent.
